What are the contraindications to using a TENS or a muscle stimulator ?

Absolute contraindications

  • Circulatory cancer
  • Patients with a pacemaker (authorization from the cardiologist is required. Treatment under interdisciplinary supervision)
  • DVT / Active phlebitis / Embolism with low frequency programs

Local contraindications with treatment under medical or interdisciplinary supervision

  • Transthoracic application
  • Anterior face of the cardiac region
  • Genital organs (mandatory training)
  • Electronic implant
  • Cardiopathy
  • Pregnancy (abdominal and lumbar region during pregnancy)
  • Epilepsy
  • Sensory skin disorder, loss of sensitivity
  • DVT/phlebitis/embolism (risk of thrombus displacement in the bloodstream)
  • Hemorrhage (may promote bleeding)
  • Tuberculosis (during the active phase)

Local contraindications

  • Transcranial application
  • Anterior region of the neck and carotid sinuses (throat)
  • Eyes
  • All infections
  • Skin damage
  • Persistent undiagnosed pain

Precautions

  • Circulatory disorder
  • Communication Disorder
  • Skin disease
  • Active epiphyseal plate
  • Preventive anticoagulant therapy (watch for vascular and cardiorespiratory signs and symptoms)
