Take control of Pain Management with TENS

WHAT IS TENS?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a drug-free approach that can help relieve different types of pain. Used by healthcare professionals for several decades, TENS is supported by a substantial body of scientific evidence.

Compact, portable and easy to use, TENS can be used at home or on the go and easily incorporated into your daily routine based on your needs.

How Does TENS Work?

Electrodes placed on the skin deliver comfortable electrical impulses that stimulate certain nerves and activate the body’s natural pain-modulating mechanisms.

How Does TENS Help Manage Pain?

TENS works with the natural mechanisms of our nervous system to help manage pain, primarily in two ways:

1- By Blocking Pain Signals

When you are in pain, pain signals travel through your nervous system to your brain, where pain is perceived.

When TENS is applied to or near the painful area, it produces a comfortable sensation that can help reduce the transmission of pain signals. As a result, the brain receives fewer of these signals, which may help reduce the perception and intensity of pain.

It is the same principle at work when we instinctively rub an area after bumping or injuring it. This mechanism is known as the Gate Control Theory, proposed by researchers Ronald Melzack and Patrick Wall in 1965.

2- By Stimulating Your Body’s Natural Pain-Relieving mechanism

Our bodies have, in a sense, their own “built-in pharmacy”: they can produce and release substances that naturally help modulate pain.

Certain forms of TENS stimulation can activate these natural pain-relieving mechanisms, including by promoting the release of naturally occurring opioids produced by the body, such as endorphins. This may help reduce pain and provide more widespread, longer-lasting relief.

What Types of Pain Can TENS Help With?

TENS does not target one specific condition. Instead, it acts on the mechanisms involved in pain, regardless of its cause. This is why it can be used to help relieve different types of pain, depending on the situation.

For example, TENS can be used to help relieve certain types of muscle or joint pain, pain associated with nerve-related pain, or pain following an injury or surgery.

Whether pain is occasional or more persistent, recent or long-standing, it can occur in many different situations, and TENS use can be adapted accordingly.
